Music and Identity

The aim of this session is to make an audio collage of the types of music the class listen to.

Music is a very significant part of our lives, children should understand the role of music in their lives and what it says about them from the point of view identity.

The class teacher should aim to build on children's understanding of how significantly music shapes an individual’s identity and if children can understand this about themselves it will help them interpret other people’s identity through the music they listen to.

Exposing children to music from different cultures and parts of the world, will help to develop a deeper respect for other cultures as well as broaden children’s horizons and help them identify something about themselves that they perhaps were not aware of.

Music has the power to help change our moods, it can relax us, excite us and even make us giggle!  However in this lesson which focues on music as a tool to representing identity, children should be geared at focussing on which country this piece of music may have originated from and what it tells us about the person who listens to it.

Children should bring music on a flash drive to school, for those children who only have their music on cds they can either bring their favourite cds for the teacher to transfer to flash drive or they can bring a list of the music they feel is important to them.  Once the class collection of music and songs is complete we can begin to select and edit in order to create a whole class music identity collage.  Animation reflecting the class' musical identity should also be added. Excellent cross curricular links with Music, Computing and Pe.

Key Questions:

1. How does this piece of music make you feel?

2. What might it tell us about the person or people who listen to this?  Think about where they might come from, how old could they be, is it a boy or a girl, a man or woman?  Encourage children to offer explanations for their observations.

3.  What types of music do you listen to?

4. What do you think your music says about you?

Art Skills:  listening skills, engaging with music, visualising and imagining, focus on sounds children can hear
